It is said that over 70 per cent of people in Africa dwell in rural communities and derive their livelihood primarily from agriculture hence; development in Africa should mainly refer to rural development. The mass media, as agents of social change, are, therefore, expected to prioritize coverage of the development concerns in rural areas in their reportage. This research therefore undertakes a comparative analysis of rural development reporting by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Port Harcourt and the Africa Independent Television (AIT) Port Harcourt. The objectives are to find out and compare the frequency of coverage, source, issues and prominence given to rural reports by the television stations under study. News bulletin from February 2016 to July 2016 were content analysed using hard news, special reports and sport news as units of analysis while the content categories are frequency, source, issues and prominence of reports. The study found that NTA and AIT PH did not give adequate coverage to rural areas in the state and that on the few occasions rural reports were carried on NTA PH, the stories were sourced from government and organizations while AIT PH visited rural areas more to report on such issues as security, environment among others. The study recommends frequent coverage of rural areas in a prominent manner by the TV stations as a means to achieving rural development in Rivers State.
