Worried that the absence of the use of traditional communication in primary schools has adversely affected the identity of the school child, this theoretical paper is put together to determine the place of traditional communication in primary schools in the rural areas of Rivers State. The use of traditional communication influences pupils but does not result in raising the academic performance of the pupils. Traditional communication is used in teaching in the primary school, through crafts and local languages. Concluding that redesigning the curriculum as well as adopting the policy on traditional communication in primary education is an effective way to enhance teaching and learning, the study recommends, among other things, that traditional communication should be adequately explored to enhance pupils’ academic performance.
