SPREADING MATERNAL HEALTH THROUGH THE MASS MEDIA AND WORD OF MOUTH IN SOUTH EAST NIGERIA: LESSONS FROM THE 2015 MILLENIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS


Abstract:

The United Nations developed eight "Millennium Development Goals" in the year 2000 in an attempt to improve the lives of the poorest people around the world. Goal 5: Improve Maternal Health.  Target 6 read: Reduce by three-quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality ratio. Thus deadline was set for 2015 for attainment.  In 2018, it becomes proper to evaluate the journey to the attainment of this set goal. In view of the need to benefit from this situation for future communication campaigns, it became necessary to conduct an analysis on the communication journey so far.. This survey research focused on goal 5 of the MDGs. Among others, the research summarised that (a) there is a linkage between the media and rural development (b) the traditional media remain potent in transmission of information (c) radio is still the choice mainstream media in reaching a widely dispersed people. Among others, the researcher recommends that change agents and development experts should continue to integrate maternal matters in the front burners of development schemes.
