THE SOCIAL MEDIA AND MASS COMMUNICATION AMONGST THE NIGERIAN YOUTHS: IN SEARCH OF LANGUAGE AND THOUGHT CLARITY

Abstract:

Social media is one of the products of scientific development of mass communication. Since science availed humanity instruments for wider dissemination of information, communication has been a high accessible tool for the molding, remolding and destruction of social and individual character. That is to say, the social character of 21st century and upwards can never remain constant giving proximity of social contacts through mass media structure. However, the communication in question being an exclusive character of human nature has language as a medium of expressing and exchanging minds. As a conscious expression, language unveils the habit of thought and content of the mind of an individual to the outside mind. The ability and extent of the outside mind (interlocutor) to apprehend the expressed language informs the conceptive structure of the expressing mind (speaker). Simply put, language represents the mind.he significance of the representation entails the nature of response to the language information. Thus, our language communication in social media should be highly assessed such that language utilization unveils the mind and adeptly informs other minds. This paper argues that the use of wrong English and vulgar languages in our tweets, instagram, whatsap, facebook and many other media channels have endangered the social-cultural institutions and belief systems; breeding in our today’s global village, every level and aspects of insanity and moral degradation. The paper ‘inter alia’ concludes that the language of the social media must be appropriate and adequately guided. The paper proffers further recommendations to the menace of social media language ills..
